DANCER
Dancer is a short film created by Arra. It explores the deeper meaning of dance and life. Fear of failure and determination to be the best can rob us of what truly matters - that we express and show up to the moment fully, whether mastered or not.
“I’m not the greatest dancer. That’s not what it’s about. It’s about feeling the dance and letting it express itself through me, no matter how mastered my movement is or not. As a human, I’m here to do the same. To let my human express fully, whether mastered or not. Cry the imperfect tears. Laugh the laugh that I’m working on. Write the words and kill my darlings. Speak the words and chuckle at the kerfuffle of my attempt. Attempting is how I gather reference points. With those points I build a picture in which I get to feel alive. The more alive I feel, the more I express - the more I speak, and write, and dance.”
DID YOU KNOW?
For the dancer video we shot in a beautiful location in the heart of Johannesburg. I had been moving for a while, and then the team said, “I think we’ve got it.” readying to move to the next shots. I watched the playback of the footage and didn’t feel it. I almost didn’t say anything, but my feathers were ruffled and I couldn’t shake the idea of sharing a video I couldn’t back fully. I spoke up, we changed the lighting completely and shot everything again. I’m so glad I backed my creative vision and my intuition, cause I love this video now.
