BREAKDOWNS
Breakdowns is a short film by Arra. It follows a woman’s mind as she explores the idea of breakdowns being an opportunity to build something new from what is broken. It makes peace with the idea of killing darlings creatively and sees the world as one made of playdough. “My mind is like playdough, my body is too.”
“My brain is built of playdough. My body is too. That squishy, sticky modeling clay I knew so well as a child. I built people and houses and animals and flowers in different colours and then I smooshed them up to build something else. Once I built a heart inside of myself and made it beat for someone, and then things between us got icky-sticky so my inner God-hands came in to smoosh it up for me to build a new one. It hurt. But there’s no creativity without destruction. So let the darlings die. Break down, to break through, to build something new. “
DID YOU KNOW?
The “playdough” in this shot is actually flour, water and food colouring, mixed the night before shooting. The process of creating these videos opened an inventive side in me, and I love how the end product, to me, looks kind of like playdough and kind of like flesh. It feels light and playful, and dark at the same time.
